Big Brothers Big Sisters adds 345 new applicants during “100 Men in 100 Days” Campaign

A 100-day agency-wide initiative by Big Brothers Big Sisters of Tampa Bay to recruit more male volunteers resulted in 345 new applicants between July 1 and Oct. 8. The majority of the approximately 1,000 area kids who are waiting for a mentor are boys, so the organization embarks on an annual campaign to raise awareness and recruit new potential Big Brothers. This year’s efforts included numerous special events, including happy hours throughout the Tampa Bay area, an afternoon at the Ferrari of Tampa Bay dealership in Palm Harbor, and attending a Bucs morning practice during summer training camp. BBBS of Tampa Bay has several programs that match caring, positive role models with children facing adversity in the Tampa Bay area. For just a few hours a month you can make a difference in the life of a child by spending quality time together at a sporting event, going to the beach, attending art shows or whatever activities you and your “Little” find appealing.

Lavonte David Charity Bowling

Buccaneers linebacker Lavonte David and more than a dozen of his teammates came out to support BBBS on Monday, Nov. 16, as part of the first Lavonte David Charity Bowling event at Splitsville in Tampa. Lavonte spent time chatting and bowling with a number of our Bigs and Littles in the early evening, then was joined by some of his Buccaneers teammates – including Jameis Winston, Gerald McCoy, Mike Evans, Johnthan Banks, Danny Lansanah, Louis Murphy and more – for a night of fun, autographs, photos and bowling with our lane sponsors and guests. Lavonte also made a personal donation of $9,000, bringing the total proceeds for the night to over $20,000. A huge thanks to Lavonte and the Bucs!

Become a volunteer. We're looking for committed and dedicated men, (and yes, women and couples, too!) who want to make a difference in the life of a child (Little). Volunteers (Bigs) spend a few hours a month doing simple things with their Little: going to the library, enjoying a ball game, just hanging out and we encourage Bigs to stay matched at least for one year. Click here, call (813) 769-3600, or e-mail to apply or receive more information.
